TL;DR
How much does a website cost? Anywhere from under $100 a year to well over $50,000. A DIY builder runs a few dollars to about $160 a month.346 A freelancer typically charges $1,500 to $6,000, a small agency $6,000 to $15,000, and an experienced agency $25,000 to $60,000.7 Clutch's data shows most web design projects come in under $10,000, even though the average is about $38,000.1
That spread is the whole story. Price follows who builds it, how much they do for you, and what the site has to accomplish. Here's what's inside each number, the costs that show up later, and how to work out what you should spend.
How much does a website cost by who builds it?
| Who builds it | Typical cost | Typical rate |
|---|---|---|
| You, on a DIY builder | About $4–$160 a month for the plan346 | Your time |
| AI website builder | $2.99–$159 a month across 12 tested builders13 | Minutes to generate |
| Freelancer | $1,500–$6,0007 | $50–$100/hr7 |
| Small agency | $6,000–$15,0007 | $100–$150/hr7 |
| Established agency | $15,000–$30,0007 | $120–$190/hr7 |
| Veteran agency | $25,000–$60,0007 | $160–$250/hr7 |
Where the work happens matters too. Clutch lists US and Canadian web design firms at $100–$149 an hour, versus under $25 in India and the Philippines.1 For context, the median US web developer earns $92,650 a year as an employee.2 Freelancers and agencies charge more per hour than that because they cover their own tools, overhead and time that isn't billable.
How much does a website cost by type of site?
| Type of site | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Basic brochure site (agency) | $5,000–$10,0007 |
| Professional business site (agency) | $15,000–$35,0007 |
| Sophisticated custom site | $35,000–$75,000+7 |
| Adding ecommerce | $10,000–$20,000 more7 |
| Small business site (survey of 100+ firms) | $1,000–$15,000, mostly $1,000–$7,0008 |
The guides mostly split sites into "brochure" and "ecommerce." Most service businesses need a third thing: a site built to generate leads. That means clear positioning, proof like case studies and reviews, and an easy way to book a call. Those pieces are where a lot of the cost and most of the value sit.
How to set your website budget
Most price guides stop at the ranges. Here's how I'd actually set a budget for a service business:
- Work out what one new client is worth. Use the profit from a typical client over the relationship, not just the first invoice.
- Estimate what a better site could add. Even one or two extra clients a year changes what's worth spending.
- Decide how long the site needs to last. A site built to last six years can cost more up front and still cost less per year.14
- Count your own time. DIY and "send us your copy" quotes look cheap until you add the hours you'll spend writing, editing and fixing.
- Leave room for what comes after launch. Maintenance, hosting and any SEO work are ongoing.910
What drives website design cost
- Custom design versus a template. Custom illustration, interaction and animation cost more;7 themes and templates keep it down.18
- Features. Payments, user accounts and integrations need back-end work.7
- Number of pages. More pages mean more content and design.7
- Who does it and where. Hourly rates range roughly tenfold by region.1
- Time. A small business site typically takes 1 to 12 weeks;8 the average project tracked by Clutch runs about 7 months from start to finish.1
- Words and proof. Few price guides count copywriting, positioning or case studies as cost drivers. For a service business, they decide whether visitors become clients. If a quote assumes you'll supply all the text, the real cost includes your time writing it.
The ongoing costs of a website
The build is only the start.
| Ongoing cost | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Squarespace plan | $19–$99/mo billed annually3 |
| Shopify plan | $29–$299/mo billed annually5 |
| Managed WordPress hosting | From $28/mo (WP Engine)12 |
| Domain renewal | About $10–$20+ a year9 |
| Maintenance (small business site) | $50–$500/mo9 |
| SEO retainer | Most commonly $501–$1,000/mo10 |
A few costs catch people out:
- Promo domains. The cheap first year is a promotion. Verisign is raising the wholesale price of .com domains to $10.97 from November 1, 2026,11 so renewals go up from there.
- Payment fees. Shopify adds a 0.6% to 2% fee if you don't use Shopify Payments,5 and Squarespace's Basic plan takes 2% of store sales.3
- Apps and plugins. Premium plugins commonly run $50–$150 each.7
What a website really costs over three years
Here's an illustration using the published numbers above. It's simple arithmetic, not a study.
- DIY on Squarespace Core, billed annually: about $29 a month for three years, roughly $1,050,3 plus a domain and a lot of your own time.
- Small agency build plus a care plan: $6,000–$15,000 to build,7 plus $100–$150 a month for maintenance,7 comes to about $9,600–$20,400 over three years.
- Add a typical small SEO retainer and three-year spend rises by another $18,000–$36,000.10
How long the site lasts changes the math. Orbit Media found that top brands' websites go about two years between redesigns, while its own client sites averaged over six years.14 A well-built site that lasts six years costs less per year than a cheap one you redo after two.

Talk through my numbersIs a website worth the money?
For a business that wins clients online, yes, and the gap between a good site and a slow, unclear one is measurable.
- Speed pays. In a 2019 study for Google, Deloitte found a 0.1-second improvement in mobile speed went with 21.6% more visitors reaching the lead form on lead-generation sites.15
- So does loading fast in the first place. Portent found B2B lead-generation pages that load in 1 second convert about three times better than pages that take 5 seconds.16
- Design shapes trust. In Stanford's classic 2002 study, a site's design and look came up in 46.1% of people's comments about whether they found it credible, more than anything else.17
That's why "how much does a website cost" is the wrong first question for a service business. Start with what one new client is worth, how many more a better site could win you, and how long the site will last. Then decide what's worth spending.
Can ChatGPT or an AI builder make my website?
It can make a website. Whether that website wins you clients is a different question. In Expert Market's tests of 12 AI builders, sites appeared in anywhere from 30 seconds to 7 minutes with modern, template-quality layouts. But the weak spots were real: irrelevant images, limited control over style, some builders never asking what the business actually does, and copy that needed editing before it could go live.13
An AI builder doesn't know your positioning, your proof or your buyers' objections. For a simple site, that may be fine. For a service business that needs its website to sell, that's the part that matters most.
Why some agencies don't publish prices
You may have noticed we don't list website prices. That's because the range is genuinely wide. Clutch's average project is about $38,000 while most projects come in under $10,000,1 and the right number depends on what your site has to do.
So we start with a no-cost Authority Scorecard, which shows where your current site builds trust and where it loses leads, then a strategy session to scope what would actually move your numbers.
